Fiber Glass Tutorial

| Q & A's
- Where do you get your fleece that you wrap your enclosure in to get its shape? I've doing fiberglass for a while and havn't found a fleece that I like yet. All the stuff I've used is either to thin, to thick, tears to easy, etc. If you have any suggestions as to what kind of fleece I should use, please help me out by telling me what kind I should get and where I can get it along with a price.
--------------------------------------------------------------
For the xterra install but we used trunk liner (non -backed). For enclosures this is much thicker and can absorb more resin leaving less work for later --FYI--.I purchase my fleece from a local fabric shop called JoAnn Fabrics. I use the solid colors (color doesnt matter) and make sure its thick enough so it wont tear but it should also stretch in all directions. If you d ont have a local fabric shop you can visit them online at http://www.joannfabrics.com but i can give you a specific on what model or brand fleece i get because what i have here is not labeled. I often find it on sale for under $5 a yard but normal price should be no more than $10 a yard.
- How much Resin did you have to add to the INSIDE portion of the enclosure to make it Sturdy or Thick enough not to FLEX!
--------------------------------------------------------------
it didnt take alot ... maybe about 1qt.
enough to cover about 1/4 inch thick...then add as much chopped matting as necassary. The total enclosure was about 1/2 inch thick. For bigger or more powerful subs you should aim for 3/4 thickness.First time I've seen someone use turtle wax...was that to help it release from the tape?
--------------------------------------------------------------
yes that acts as a mold release. if you use enough, once your mold has dried you can pull it up without much effort... it works very w
- Can you tell me what it is you use to cover the fibreglass and mdf boxes in pictures xterra105 to xterra120, and how do you attach (if that is what happens) the boxes to the fibreglass? What would the expected cost be of such a project?
-------------------------------------------------------------
On the xterra we used trunk liner (thin carpet) pulled tightly and attached to the mold using spray glue. If your project has more curves you may want to use fleece instead of the trunk liner... this will stretch better but will need more reinforcing for the finished product. Once you stretch your fabric (you can even use an old tee shirt) then use a disposable brush to apply the resin. Once that dries then you can use resin from the inside along with some chopped matting to thicken and strengthen the enclosure. The cost will vary... but generally speaking (in us dollars) about 2 gallons of fiberglass resin $30-45 some chopped mat $7... trunk liner $15 a yard disposable brushes $3...gloves...spray glue $15 a can ....wood... and tape ... I would say around $100 or so.
